What the India Foreign Trade June 2026 Data Showed

Merchandise exports rose to US$40.41 billion in June 2026 from US$34.98 billion in June 2025, while merchandise imports rose to US$70.84 billion from US$54.08 billion, the ministry said. Services exports, estimated at US$33.03 billion against US$32.11 billion, and services imports, estimated at US$17.92 billion against US$15.90 billion, round out the total trade figures; the ministry notes that the latest actual services data from the Reserve Bank of India is for May 2026, so the June services numbers are estimates.

Among merchandise categories, the ministry named gems and jewellery, engineering goods, organic and inorganic chemicals, electronic goods and rice as the major drivers of export growth in June. Gems and jewellery exports rose 34.64 per cent to US$2.41 billion, engineering goods rose 20.74 per cent to US$11.48 billion (the largest export category by value), electronic goods rose 18.93 per cent to US$4.93 billion, organic and inorganic chemicals rose 19.42 per cent to US$2.77 billion, and rice rose 16.48 per cent to US$1.00 billion. The fastest percentage gains came from a smaller base: other cereals exports rose 244.29 per cent, handicrafts excluding hand-made carpets rose 59.69 per cent, and meat, dairy and poultry products rose 54.63 per cent.

Why imports outpaced exports

On the import side, petroleum crude and products purchases rose 40.09 per cent to US$19.33 billion, the largest single contributor to the wider deficit in dollar terms. Electronic goods imports rose 58.77 per cent to US$13.36 billion, and fertiliser imports (crude and manufactured) rose 201.29 per cent to US$2.29 billion, though from a smaller base. By source country, imports from China P Rp rose 40.26 per cent to US$13.34 billion, the largest single import source for the month; imports from Russia rose 85.02 per cent and from Taiwan rose 135.03 per cent.

On the export side, shipments to China P Rp rose 31.49 per cent in June, one of the fastest-growing destinations alongside South Africa (up 114.04 per cent) and Malaysia (up 99.18 per cent), the ministry’s country-wise data showed.

What next

For the April-June 2026-27 quarter, the ministry put the cumulative trade balance at -US$37.42 billion against -US$20.85 billion in the same quarter of 2025-26, with the merchandise trade deficit alone at US$86.86 billion against US$68.75 billion a year earlier. The services trade surplus for the quarter was US$49.43 billion against US$47.90 billion, continuing to offset part of the merchandise gap. Cumulative non-petroleum exports for the quarter stood at US$106.30 billion, up 12.44 per cent.
