India CPI June 2026: Retail Inflation Rises to 4.38 Per Cent as Food Prices Climb

NEW DELHI: India’s retail inflation rose to 4.38 per cent in June 2026 from 3.93 per cent in May, according to the India CPI June 2026 release of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), as food inflation climbed back above 5 per cent. The series is now compiled on Base Year 2024=100, issued through PIB Delhi on 13 July 2026.

Food and jewellery drove the increase

Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), rose to 5.32 per cent in June from 4.78 per cent in May, per the release. Ginger prices rose 50.41 per cent year on year, tomato was up 31.92 per cent and raisin (kishmish) climbed 20.52 per cent. Potato remained the outlier on the other side, down 20.34 per cent, along with peas at minus 9.67 per cent.

The sharpest inflation in the release, however, sat outside food. The personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services division recorded 16.72 per cent inflation, the highest of the release’s twelve divisions, on the back of silver jewellery at 133.21 per cent and gold, diamond and platinum jewellery at 36.82 per cent, per the item-level table.

Housing and vehicle purchases stay contained

Housing inflation was 2.10 per cent in June, 2.66 per cent in rural areas and 1.90 per cent in urban areas, one of the lowest readings among the release’s divisions. Purchase of vehicles fell 4.59 per cent year on year, transport overall rose 4.31 per cent and health inflation stood at 1.42 per cent, as per Annexure I and Annexure II of the release.

State-level inflation

Annexure III of the release, which carries the general index and inflation for every state and Union Territory, shows Telangana with the highest combined CPI inflation in June 2026 at 6.36 per cent, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry at 5.39 per cent each, Odisha at 5.15 per cent and Madhya Pradesh at 5.09 per cent. The release cautions that state-level item indices should be interpreted with care, given thin price samples in some cases.

Data collected from over 2,800 markets and villages

The June 2026 numbers are provisional; the all-India combined CPI index stood at 107.00 and the CFPI index at 107.15, on Base Year 2024=100, the release said. Prices were collected from 1,407 urban markets and 1,465 villages on a weekly roster, with a 100 per cent response rate in both rural and urban markets during June. May 2026 figures, now final, were 3.93 per cent for CPI and 4.78 per cent for CFPI.
